Tipping Your Movers - What to know BEFORE moving day!

Picture
It's moving day.

You have had to remember a hundred details including making sure the movers know what to do, what doesn't go on the truck, what box goes into what room and everything else that goes along with moving day.

What you haven't thought about is tipping your movers and now it's the end of the day and the move is over and you are thanking these hard-working people who have put so much effort into making sure that the dresser is in the right spot, the doors didn't get scratched, the floors didn't get dirty and the treadmill got moved impossibly into the basement...then it occurs to you..."Should I tip them?!?!?" You're horrified because you don't have any cash because you haven't figured out where the ATM is in this new town and you can't find the checkbook and you wonder if a check would be an appropriate tipping method anyway!

So, now is the time to plan ahead! We are going to give you the Top Tips For Tipping! (see what we did there?)

First thing to know...our Spring Hill Moving Company movers do NOT expect a tip. Yup, you read that right! Our movers are specially trained to do a fantastic job for you and not to expect a tip. In fact the only reason, I am sharing any of this information with you right now is because it is a question that we get asked quite often.
So, while tips aren't expected, we have found that satisfied customers often do tip and our movers will graciously accept tips.
So, how much?
It depends.
It depends on things like the duration of the move, any special treatment that some of your belongings might have required, and how you feel the move went overall.
IF you do decide to tip (even though you know it's not expected), on average here's what we have seen over the years:
For a move that is fairly small (apartments, storage units, etc) and that don't take very long, $10-$20 per person is fairly common.
For a move that is a bit larger or more involved (3 bedroom house, townhome, etc.) that might take 3 or 4 hours, $20-$30 is common.
For large moves, $20-$50 is about average.
If there are special circumstances that require extra effort, time or specific instructions, that might also be a consideration for a larger tip.

Again, we only share this information because we often get asked but our crew members are professionally trained to do their best work for you regardless of a tip.

We would love to assist you with YOUR move! Please call us at (615) 696-7945 or fill out our information request form (click here.)

I Saw A "Deal" For Spring Hill, TN area Local Moving Services

Looking for a great deal on local or long distance moving in the Spring Hill, TN area? Watch out for group-social-type "deals!"

Everyone loves a great deal! We do too! In fact, we get some of the same emails that you do that talk about special deals on everything from restaurants to oil changes to air duct cleaning to moving services.

So, what about those "deals"?

We have all heard the saying, "if it seems too good to be true than it probably is." When you see those "deals" come in your email, a moving company has made arrangements with the deal provider to pay them a significant percentage of what you pay for the deal. So, for example, if you see a deal for 2 movers for 2 hours for $90, the "deal company" will most likely get 25-50% of that money. The moving company will then have to pay for 2 men's wages for 2 hours, gas for a moving truck, supplies, overhead expenses and insurance and by the time all is said and done, the moving company has spent their 50% and then some!

How can they do that?

Simply, they will make sure that your move takes more than 2 hours and more than 2 men. Moving companies are a business and they can't afford to send out a truck and 2 men for 2 hours and not make any money, plus since those resources are being used, they are unavailable for other jobs that will make them money. They have to make their money somehow and so what normally happens is they will add in charges that would normally be included. They will take longer than normal to do the work so that they can charge you for an inflated 3rd hour or 3rd man. Or they will tell you that they are already booked if they feel like they can't do the other things. So, your "deal" isn't really a deal. In fact, it can become a headache and more expensive than you expect.

Reputable companies will give you their rates over the phone or in email, they hire professional movers who are trained to keep up a "pace" that ensures that they get your move done as quickly and carefully as possible, and they don't purposefully keep their movers or their resources on a job longer than they have to because time is money for you and for them. They are also concerned about making their customers happy because they will often become repeat customers and refer their business to their friends who may be moving.

So, be careful of "deals" and instead call a local moving company who will be there before, during and after your move. At Spring Hill Moving Company, we will give you our competitive rates, an accurate estimate and a total listing of everything we believe will make your local or long distance move stress-free, safe and reliable. Plus, we are based right here in Spring Hill, TN and have been serving the Nashville, Franklin, TN, Murfreesboro, TN and Brentwood, TN areas for over a decade.

Does it need a box?

Most things in your home fit nice and easy into a box. There are boxes that are specially designed for flat-screen TVs, mirrors, large pictures, wardrobes and more. There are, however, some thing that just don't box up very well. So, what do you do with those items?

Moving professionals will tell you that you should box everything including those difficult to box items. Why? Quite simply so they won't get lost, damaged or cause other damage. Plus, it saves you time and money with your move.

Lamps, decorative pieces, artificial trees and plants, fishing rods, and other items with poles and that are long and tall can be very difficult to box. Here at Spring Hill Moving Company, we tell our customers to do their best to box those items or wrap them securely with cardboard, plastic wrap, packing blankets or other protective material. Tall wardrobe boxes are excellent for lamps. Place the lamps in the box and surround with throw pillows or other lightweight items.

Always remember the Box Rule: The bigger the box, the lighter the items in it. A large box filled with books can be very, very heavy!

What if you just can't pack it to move? Ask us! We will be happy to assist you with packing it (we are professionals and have just about seen it all and packed it!) or we can give it special attention in loading. The other option is to transport it separately in another vehicle.

Does it need a box? Yes...for it's safety and protection and the safety and protection of your other items.

7 Packing Hacks For A Better Moving Day

7/23/2015

Planning a move is a hassle and can be one of the most stressful events in your life. Here are some packing tips that will help you to be organized and pack your home like a pro!
You can pack yourself or you can use the packing services of pros like Spring Hill Moving Company. If you do it yourself, these tips will help!
1) Boxes! Get boxes!
Do your best to get boxes that are a uniform size, that way it'll be much easier to load. Obviously, every box is not created equal! Use smaller boxes for heavier items (like books) and for fragile items (like glasses). Use larger boxes for blankets, pillows and other large but light things. Where can you get boxes? Self-storage facilities and self-moving locations will sell boxes and so will big box hardware stores. Don't forget to try to find FREE BOXES! In a city like Spring Hill, there are literally dozens and dozens of families moving here each month and when they unpack, their leftover boxes could save you a lot of money. Check out community resources like Facebook groups for people getting rid of boxes.
2) Tape Gun!
Worth it's weight in gold! A tape gun is your best friend while you are packing. Usually for less than $10 you can get a tape gun that will go the distance!
3) Bubble Wrap!
Bubble wrap has a great reputation in the moving world and for good reason! It's a must-have for anything fragile or that needs a little extra protection. You can get it at the big box hardware stores or find even better deals online through retailers such as Amazon.
4) Big Markers!
Notice that I said "MarkerS". You need several. Why? Because there never seems to be one right where you need it to be so they need to be everywhere! You will need those markers because you are going to...
5) Label EVERYTHING!
This should have probably been the number 1 hack because it will save you the most time, effort, energy and sanity. Whether you write everything on a sticker and put it on the box or you just scrawl right on the cardboard, write down 3 Things: A)What is in the box. Include as much detail as you can because you will wind up with a box with one-of-these-things-is-not-like-the-others and have the tv remote in the box with the pots and pans. B)Where the box belongs. On moving day, that is the very first question that will be asked about that box as it comes of the truck. C)Special Instructions...Fragile, Heavy, This End Up...are all very helpful when it comes to putting that box on and off the truck. That label is so important that you should put it on 3 Sides of the box, too...Top, Front and Side.
6) Pack The Box!
Fill the box to the very top and pack it tightly. Fill up empty space with towels, blankets, smaller items, etc. Keep in mind that each box is going to wind up with either a box under it or a box (or several!) on top of it. A box that is packed all the way will act like a building block. A box not packed all the way will act like a taco...the sides will bend and crack and all the insides will wind up on the outside. Pack your boxes tightly so they can survive the most important journey of their lives.
7) Have More Of EVERYTHING Than You Think You Need!
Allow yourself more time, have more boxes, get more tape, and you can never have enough bubble wrap! The last thing you want to do when you are in a packing frenzy is have to stop because you ran out of something. Get more than you need and don't worry because you can return what you don't use or be a blessing to someone else who is moving.
Listed as one of the most stressful events in our lives, moving is not easy. These tips will help to make sure that you are prepared to make it as smooth as possible!

7 Ways To Make Your Move Better

7/23/2015

Moving Day is coming up and you want to be ready, right? If you have hired a moving company like Spring Hill Moving Company, there are some things you can do to help make moving day run smoothly for you and for your movers! Assuming you have already packed using our 7 Step Packing Plan, these are tips for the actual Moving Day.

1) Pets are great...except on moving day!
We love pets. We even have pets. On moving day, make sure your pets are safely and happily away from all the commotion of moving. Their natural curiosity combined with open doors and strange people in their home is a recipe for potential problems. For the safety of your pets, your moving team and your belongings, it's best to have them away from all the action.
2) Kids are great, too!
On moving day, though, it might be best to get a baby sitter for the youngsters. Moving trucks are big and interesting and ramps look like fun to run up and down, but your moving day is serious business and there's a lot going on and for their safety it's best if they observe from a distance.
3) Clear a path outside!
Be sure to make it easy for your movers to get their truck as close to your house as possible. Move your vehicles out of the driveway and park them away from the house if possible. Movers like Spring Hill Moving Company often use trucks that have boxes that are 26 feet long or longer and they need all the room they can get!
4) Clear a path inside!
Try to remove as much clutter as possible to make it easier for your movers to walk down hallways, go up and down stairs, and get your belongings onto the truck. It will make your move go smoothly and save time and money.
5) Label, label, label!
While you may know that your electric skillet, toaster and waffle maker are in that box, your movers have no idea so label the box clearly on the top and sides so your movers know what room the box belongs in. If possible, label furniture too so they know if that chair belongs in the master suite or the den.
6) Make a plan and stick to the plan!
When you did the walk through and inventory with your mover, make sure they know about everything. In order to save you time and money, your mover uses calculations to determine how many people, how many blankets, dollies and how big a truck to bring to your move. Avoid last minute add-ons like the shed in the back yard, the stuff in the storage unit or all the Christmas boxes in the attic. Add-ons can cost time and money.
7) Be ready!
Unless you hired your movers to also pack your belongings, make sure you have boxes packed and everything in a box. Last minute boxing the day of the move will potentially increase time and costs.
Hiring professionals, like Spring Hill Moving Company, is the best way to make sure that your move is a stress-free and smooth as it can be. These tips will help your movers and ultimately save you time and money.
